A claim that Hyderabad is the most expensive metro and Delhi has the lowest rates needs a defined product, date and set of cities. A petrol-price comparison does not establish which city has the highest overall cost of living.
This guide explains how to compare the two cities using like-for-like information. It does not provide a live price table or an overall affordability ranking.
Start by identifying what the price measures
| Expense | What to match |
|---|---|
| Fuel | Same date, fuel grade, retailer and unit |
| Rent | Similar neighbourhood, property size, furnishings and lease terms |
| Transport | The actual commute, fares, parking and frequency |
| Household spending | The same basket of groceries, utilities and services |
How to verify Hyderabad and Delhi fuel prices
The Petroleum Planning & Analysis Cell provides official links to fuel price build-ups and state retail prices. IndianOil also publishes a method for checking indicative local petrol and diesel prices using an outlet’s dealer code.
IndianOil lists example codes for New Delhi and Hyderabad, notes that daily price changes take effect at 6 a.m., and warns that rates can vary between outlets. Check the current official record before treating a quoted figure as today’s price.

Why a fuel ranking cannot rank living costs
Fuel is only one part of a household budget. A person renting near work may face a very different total from someone with a long commute. Likewise, a premium apartment should not be compared directly with a smaller unfurnished home in a different type of neighbourhood.
Build a monthly comparison
List rent, utilities, transport, food and other regular expenses for each realistic option. Record the date and source beside each estimate, separate one-off deposits from monthly spending, and compare the totals using your own needs.
Editorial correction: An earlier version presented a broad city ranking without a defined dataset. That unsupported ranking has been removed.
